7000 RINDER

LET YOUR BODY MELT IN MINE

Filmed in Super 8, the images are reminiscent of a typical vacation film of the 70ies. The camera imitates a hurried tourist view scanning a mountainous landscape. Where is this landscape, in Switzerland, somewhere in Asia, or is this a mountainous landscape in Idaho, like in the lyrics? The recordings have been done in the Kumgan Mountains, North Korea, which has been developed into a tourist zone for Western visitors and mainly South Koreans.

„7000 Rinder“, (Engl.: 7000 cows), was a popular Swiss song, climbing the charts in 1963. Peter Hinnen was acclaimed as a yodeler king and hit-singer, who performed in a cowboy costume playing the western guitar. The version of “7000 Rinder” used in the video is an adaptation of the original song by a Korean yodel club in Seoul. The lyrics are translated into Korean, except for the refrain which remains in German. Because of the translation the new version changes in content as well as connotation.

The hybrid formed by the Korean yodelers and the Swiss hit singer implies questions of individual versus societal identity, which are reinforced by the simultaneity of the two different lyrics in the video. The title of the video refers to the donation of 500 cows given by the chairman of South Korea's Hyundai group to North Korea. This was done in 1998 to smooth negotiations for the development of the Mount Kumgang area into a tourist destination.
